Bloodtide - Melvin Burgess (1999)

Siggy and Signy, twins and best friends, are abruptly separated when their ganglord father pressures fourteen-year-old Signy to marry his rival in order to bring an early peace between the two families.
Betrayed, injured and impoverished, Siggy slowly rises back up and hopes to return his bloodline to power.
Meanwhile, Signy's loyalties are torn between her husband and her brother. Behind the scenes and locked away from the world, Signy acts to shape the gang war to her will.

'Bloodtide' is set in the ruin of future London, walled off from the rest of the world and written
from several different viewpoints; first person accounts alternating between Siggy and Signy, occasional accounts from minor characters and third person accounts.
With a steady pace and a dark tone, 'Bloodtide' draws the reader into a world of reawakening gods, dangerous 'halfmen' creatures and the crippling ambition of two rival ganglords. The sequel 'Bloodsong' continues Siggy's story through his heir, Sigmurd.
